Elf Like Interview by Kath. Elf Like Interview
1) How long have Elf..Like been together?
| Article By Kath on Jul 23, 2002 |
We've been writing songs together for about 4 years and playing gigs sporadically over the last 2 -- 3 years.
2 ) Where does the name come from?
Mmmm, the 'like' bit comes from me saying 'like' a lot, as in "You know, like, um, blah, blah, blah". Elf comes from being told I looked like an elf, at which I would've said something like "So I'm an elf, like, am I?" We needed a band name, it seemed like a good idea at the time!
3) How did you guys meet?
We met when we were both working at David Jones in Canberra - many years ago! I'd recently migrated from England with my family. I was working as a window dresser and Mark was a casual in the toy dept - we met over a display! Mark played drums in a uni band at the time and I was doing covers of Pet Shop Boys songs on a synth in my bedroom. We shared experiences over the years and as individuals dabbled in music pursuits. It wasn't until over a coffee one day that we decided to give songwriting together a go - it was Canberra, 1998.
4) What would be your 3 major musical influences?
I'm speaking for myself as Mark isn't here:
i) Pet Shop Boys - I saw their debut performance of West End Girls on Top of The Pops in England, it must've been around 1985. They stood out as being different, both musically and image wise. They'd hardly performed live and looked really nervous. I found it inspiring that an electronic duo could make it in such a pop/rock band environment;
ii) Depeche Mode - their songs are so melancholy, passionate and angst ridden and they've kept evolving;
iii) Everything But The Girl - I was really taken by their song "Missing" and their ability to repackage themselves as an electronic, drum 'n' bass duo, moving away from their earlier folky sound.
5) What is one thing you'd like to change about the
How female artists are marketed as scantily dressed sex objects. I'm sick of seeing videos of female singers strutting about with their breasts barely covered!
6) Where do you see yourself in 5 yrs time?
I would like to think still grafting away at becoming a more competent and confident singer/songwriter. And not working in admin. to pay the bills!
7) What do you think makes a band stand out from all the
One that's true to themselves. They're doing it 'cos they have something to express and share. The driving force isn't fame and fortune.
8) What CD releases have you guys had out? Any in the pipe-line?
9) Who is your favourite cast member from Secret Life of Us?
Probably Kelly. She analyses everything to death and I can relate to that, unfortunately!
10) Final thoughts........(On your band, where you're headed,
words of wisdom, etc....)
We're probably heading for oblivion, but to head there we first have to be at least a little bit known! I'm based in Melbourne and Mark is in Canberra, which logistically is very frustrating, but we plan to line up some gigs in Melbourne and work on some new material in the coming months.
