In Vivo started toward the end of 1996,as a moniker for James and I as an acoustic duo, we crossed the Pacific & recorded an album with Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde)& played shows with various musos in California as IN VIVO. On return to Melbourne after 14 months in LA, Kris HArris joined us as our drummer & we played shows for about a year as a three piece before David Thomas joined us.
Late last year, due to chronic wrist pain, Kris had to stop drumming and we persuaded Phill Calvert into the IN VIVO fold..so in our current incarnation...we're less than a year old. But IN VIVO (the empire) has been going for 7 years.
2 ) Where does the name come from?
Believe it or not from a self help book I was reading called "Your Anger and how to LIve with it" amongst exercises for anger management was "in vivo" work...which meant doing techniques for anger managment in your life...I've always felt lyrics & music & singing my guts out to be the best form of anger expression...so in searching for a new band name , it stuck. It really means 'in life', a broad topic for songs of experience & innocence.
3) How did you guys all meet?
I met Phill CAlvert on a Greyhound bus trip to Sydney. DAve and I met playing gigs in separate bands together in the early nineties...and one morning, about 10 years ago, I woke up and found James in my bed.
4) What would be your 3 major musical influences?
We're all too old to whittle it down that much, we like many different styles of music and there's 4 of us, so I'd say each other.
5) What is one thing you'd like to change about the music industry?
Unfair distribution of wealth.
6) Where do you see yourself in 5 yrs time?
At the Grammys after party.
7) What do you think makes a band stand out from all the others?
PASSION....Honesty, intensity, talent, soul wrenching driving thrusting sexy love for what they're doing.
8) What CD releases have you had out? Any in the pipe-line?
In Vivo have released 2 full length albums, one self-titled produced by Johnette Napolitano, and "Punks LIke You Are A Dime A Dozen" released last year. PLus a 6 song EP called "Scary". We're working up 18 new songs at the moment, with a view to record 3,in October or thereabouts, and release a single early next year.
9) Favourite cast member of Secret Life of Us?
We have never watched that show...but my brother was an extra on it last week so I'd have to say, Glenn Maynard.
10) Final thoughts........(On your band, where you're headed, words of wisdom, etc....)
Who knows where we're headed but we trully dig making music together so as long as we're writing and working on new songs, able to record and play them to an audience now and again...that's all the joy we can realistically deliver to ourselves. It's a lottery...and we're going to play it until we drop dead...cause we're all sick with love for playing our instruments singing up a storm and inflicting our sounds onto the unsuspecting.
